Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) was discovered by Francine Shapiro in 1987.
It uses an eight-phase model incorporating bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping or sounds) which facilitates the adaptive information processing system, therefore allowing the client to access their own wisdom, insight and healing.

It allows the replacement of damaging false or negative self-beliefs with adaptive positive self-beliefs.

EMDR has shown high levels of effectiveness for PTSD in clinical trials.

There is growing research of its efficacy for other conditions such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, chronic pain, substance use, disaster response and treating traumatic memories for those with psychotic disorders.
